Print no. 58 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" Label Text: On the island of Shikoku, Mount Ishizuchi is a major center of Shugendo, an esoteric folk religion based on mountain worship and a blend of Buddhism and Shintoism. Perhaps most interesting in this print of the mountain and the village of Saijo is Hiroshige’s use of perspective and printing techniques, such as embossing on the sail. Although he experimented with European linear perspective (a single viewpoint and vanishing point), he also references the use of multiple viewpoints found in Japanese landscape paintings to dramatic effect. As one looks down on the sea, another looks straight at the mast and sail.
