Beschreibung:

A girl wearing a raincoat and walking on high geta (clogs) shelters herself from light rain with her umbrella. The raincoat was first seen in Japan in the late 16th century when missionaries and traders from Portugal began to visit. By the mid-18th century, some Western fashions like this had been modified to fit with kimono and became commodities for the warrior and rich merchant classes. The poem reads: “Shinoburedo kao ni denikeri hototogisu” (She hid her love but it showed on her face when she heard the cuckoo). (from "VOGUE in Japan: Edo Fashion through Japanese prints" exhibition 07/30/08-)
