Beschreibung:

The name Shinsai literally means the Tiger's studio. Much of Shinsai's surviving work reflects a strong interest in Western design, especially the effects of atmospheric perspective and shadow. Takanawa was the point on Tokyo Bay from which the great Tökaidö Highway left the environs of Tokyo for the Kansai district to the West. (from Hokusai His Students exhibition 1/30/2007-) Shinsai was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, who gave him the name Shinsai in 1800. Much of Shinsai's surviving work reflects a strong interest in Western design, especially the effects of atmospheric perspective and shadows. Until recently this print was attributed to Hokusai, but it is now known to be by Shinsai. Takanawa was the point on Tokyo Bay from which the great Tökaidö Highway left the environs of Tokyo for the Kansai district to the west. (from Uki-e exhibition 2004: June-August)
