Beschreibung:
In this print Mt. Fuji is seen from Lake Hakone, Söshü (Sagami) Province. Two arms of the lake are shown here with a promontory between them and yellow cliffs along the shore. The importance and prominence of the high mountain are further enhanced by the delicate shading of the face of the mountain, combined with the lightening effect of white- and yellow-colored clouds. This print is typical of the clarity with which Hiroshige approached his last print series. The composition is balanced, without need for figure or traveler to remind one that a journey is in progress. The shading of water, sky, and land adds depth and interest to the picture plane. (from “View from an Enchanted Window: Hiroshige and Mt. Fuji” exhibition, 3/16/2006-) **************** Hakone is a resort spot famous for its hot springs. The light gray shading of Mount Fuji and the gradations of green used to portray the foliage covering the cliffs are reminiscent of Western chiaroscuro, a technique that would have been familiar to Hiroshige and other artists of the late Edo period. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
