Beschreibung:

Utagawa Hiroshige II's real name was Suzuki Chimpei. He was an apprentice of Ando Hiroshige, one of the greatest ukiyo-e landscape artists. Chimpei is known for his vertical landscapes of Edo and views of Yokohama. This print takes an interesting perspective on the view form Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo. Human activity is implied through the depiction of a ladder jutting into the sky and a fluttering kite, though only the very top of the workmen's heads are visible at the bottom. The cramped view of the densely developed harbor also creates the impression of urban activity. Rows of merchant storehouses in the background speak of economic prosperity associated with the Edo period. (2008)
